STEM Field Trips Available For Local Schools!

at Roller City of Jacksonville.

By Lisa Hamilton January 14, 2020

As some of you know for the few years our family lived in California I was a Preschool Teacher, so when I found out that our local skating rink; Roller City of Jacksonville offered a STEM based field trip I had to find out more information. They were nice enough to let me come by for an active field trip to see & experience first hand what exactly one of their STEM field trips are like. I was very impressed with the field trip not only from a previous educator's point of view but also from a parent's point of view!

Students love field trips because typically it means no or minimal classwork and/or no homework! Teacher's like field trips too but they are stressful, trying to figure out if the students will gain any actual knowledge from it? How can I take what was learned and incorporate it into the classroom? Did all my students turn in their field trip form? Did all my students send in their field trip money? Oh great, Johnny forgot his lunch again! And let's not forget the constant 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6...??? Ugh, I lost my headcount! 1, 2, 3, 4, 5..... Well, the teacher will still have to do a headcount when rounding their students up to leave but being that the field trip is in a building and not in an open outdoor area it helps ease some anxiety. Roller City also offers a few different lunch options for students, they can bring their own lunch or have pizza from the concession stand.

Here is a little more about my STEM field trip experience at Roller City. The lesson topic was Newton On Roller Skates (the instructor's favorite lesson) the students learned about Newton's Three Laws of Motion in a fun interactive way! Chelsea the STEM Educator at Roller City did an amazing job keeping the students engaged and explaining Newton's Law in terms they would understand! Chelsea has a background in teaching Elementary as well as Middle School-age children prior to her teaching this STEM program and she is very good at what she does. I asked Chelsea if she has any goals for the STEM program in 2020, here is her response "Our goal for 2020 STEM is to schedule at least 100 field trips and create a love for roller skating in the students that attend our field trips."

The students had a blast (I did too) I don't think I saw any children without a smile on their face during the field trip! This is definitely a great addition for local schools to participate in! If you are an educator and would like more information on Roller City's STEM program please contact Chelsea, her contact infomration is below!

After the students learned about Newton's Laws of Motion they were split into groups to make balloon cars!

The students had a race to see which groups balloon car went the furthest!

Some fun activities were included in the roller skating portion of the field trip like Wiggle Wiggle Bug! Then at the end there was a dance party!
