Hammocks Beach State Park Junior Ranger Program

Take a Child Outside

By Lisa Hamilton October 8, 2019

During the week of September, 24th to September, 30th places all over the nation participated in Take a Child Outside (TACO) by having events & activities planned to encourage kids to get up and get outside. Hammocks Beach State Park participated by having fun 3-day adventure camp planned for local kids between the ages of 6 to 12 years old to enjoy. This free program was part of the North Carolina State Junior Ranger Program and the children that participated received a certificate on the last day. Even though TACO stands for "Take a Child Outside" I personally enjoyed going to this event and even learned a few things! This is an event that you definitely won't want to miss next year!

Day 1
On the first day, the kids were paired with a buddy, given a net & jar to catch a bug in order to take a closer look at it. Once all the kids had something in their jar they sat down to look the insects, learn about it, ask questions, and then release them back to where they were found.

Day 2
This day the kids were able to explore some of the Nature Trail at Hammocks Beach State Park to learn about habitats. They did a scavenger hunt while on the trail to help them look for things they might not typically look for, discover different habitats, and ofcourse to have fun!

Day 3
On the last day the kids got to use nets again but this time in the water to learn more about Marine Life! This fun activity was a good hands-on way for the kids (and adults) to discover and learn more about marine animals we have living in our local Marshes. The goal was for the kids to safely catch live marine life to be placed in a container to share with the group. It was amazing to see how proud each child was to share what they found with the group! The kids talked about things like where they found it, how they caught it, what they think it eats, and more. After that, they had a chance to touch or hold the live animal before they were released.

At the end of day 3 all the participants received their Junior Park Ranger Certificate of Achievement for completing the activities of Take a Child Outside & a Hammocks Beach State Park patch!
