Disney's Aladdin: Movie Review

Bring the Aladdin Magic to Life at Home

By Amy Ghiglieri, Publisher of Macaroni Kid Frederick, MD September 17, 2019

My kids range in age from nine to three and lately it’s been so hard to find a movie that the whole family enjoys. We live for our Friday family movie nights so when Disney sent Macaroni Kid Frederick both the cartoon version of the Signature Edition Aladdin and the new live action version of Aladdin, I was pretty excited to surprise my crew with two back-to-back family movie nights.

I remember as a child when the animated version of Aladdin was released. It was all so magical to me and I listened to the soundtrack on repeat for months. When I realized I had never watched Disney’s Aladdin with my own children, I couldn’t believe that I had yet to share one of my favorite classic animated movies with them. We snuggled in for the night with our snacks and within minutes, my kids were transported into a dynamic ‘whole new world’ full of action and excitement.

The following night we watched the live action Aladdin. My husband and I were so looking forward to the movie and it did not disappoint. With Will Smith as Genie, Naomi Scott as Jasmine and in his first major film role, Mena Massoud as Aladdin, the cast brings the Aladdin magic to both a whole new generation and those of us who grew up with the animated classic in a fresh and exciting way. The film is vibrant, engaging, fast paced and perfect for all ages. Now it’s my turn as a parent to listen to my daughter playing both of the Aladdin soundtracks on repeat.

This past weekend Macaroni Kid Frederick hosted a Magic Carpets and Movies event at Pump It Up of Frederick. It’s so easy to take your Aladdin family movie night to the next level. We made our own magic carpets to sit on by decorating white pillowcases with fabric markers and stencils and we used embroidery thread for the corner tassels. The snack was an easy and tasty magic carpet graham cracker. Simply spread icing on a graham cracker and let your kiddos decorate it with sprinkles and candy. Add in some popcorn and you have a night of Aladdin excitement.

If you have a child with a birthday coming up, a Magic Carpets and Movies party would be so fun to host in your own home. My daughter is already planning her Jasmine Halloween costume and I am finding myself singing on repeat the song Speechless from the live action version. Get to planning your own Aladdin event - I promise it will be a time for everyone to remember!
