By Lisa Hamilton

I'm sure all of you are watching this storm closely and taking proper precautions as we are in our house but I wanted to do a quick short article with a few resources to help your family stay safe. This is mainly to keep everyone updated and provide information to resources you may need.

**I will be updating this article with new information on Hurricane Dorian as the week goes on. When I do these updates I will make a Facebook post on the Macaroni Kid Jacksonville Page letting you know so make sure you "like" the page and set the option to get notified of a new post.

Hurricane Preparedness Tips

1. Water & Food: Try to get these items in advance since we all know the stores get crazy with even a hint of a storm coming!

It is recommended to have enough water and food in the house to last each person a week.

So if you have a baby that is on formula make sure you have enough of that on hand as well.

2. Money & Gas: Make sure to have some extra cash on hand in case ATM's are down or a power outage making some stores or gas stations unable to take debit/credit cards.

Fill all your vehicles if possible with gas so if there are gas station closings or gas shortage.

3. Batteries & Power: Any item like flashlights or radio make sure to have new batteries in them and to have extra batteries on hand.

Power Banks are great to have normally but they are important for emergency situations as well.

Charge any Power Banks you have and keep them together with a charging cord that is needed to recharge it or charge your devices.

4. First Aid & Medication: A First Aid Kit is something to keep on hand normally but make sure to have one stocked and ready.

Try to have a month's worth of medication ready too!

I know for some prescriptions that might be difficult so don't hesitate to reach out to your doctor to ask if they can help or have any suggestions.

5. "Go Bag": Have a "go bag" ready with clothing & toiletries so if there is a recommended or mandatory evacuation you can leave quickly.

Traffic leaving can be unpredictable so it is good to be ready to go at a moment's notice without worrying about forgetting something.

School Info

Onslow County:

If you have children in Onslow County Schools you can stay up to date with information like school delays or closings from their website HERE.

Onslow County Schools also have an app that is available on Android and Apple devices which they update in conjunction with the website. That is a good resource to stay up to date when you are on the go.

The Onslow County Schools Facebook Page is also updated with important information to keep the parents, students, and staff informed.

Carteret County:

If you have a child in Carteret County Schools they are updating the website HERE to keep the parents, students, and staff updated with any information.

The Carteret County Schools Facebook Page is also updated with important information to keep the parents, students, and staff informed.

** By noon on Tuesday, September 3rd Carteret County will announce if there will be any delays or closures for Wednesday, September 4th.

Useful Apps

ReadyNC: If you download any app to help stay up to date on all things Hurricane this would be the one!

I found it very resourceful last year when Hurricane Florence came through, it has everything from weather, to road closures, power outages, and even open shelters.

This app is available through the Google Play Store & iTunes!

Onslow County Schools: This app will have any school closures or messages from the Superintendent front and center as soon as you open the app!

This app is available through the Google Play Store & iTunes!

Craven County Schools: This app will also have any school closures or messages from the Superintendent front and center as soon as you open the app.

This app is available through the Google Play Store & iTunes!
